Both playful and haunting, Drew Mosley’s illustrative, character-based works are simultaneously innocent and foreboding. Scenes depict the creatures and belles of Drew’s imagined world, images appearing frozen, often in mid mission. In these moments of peril or safety, anthropomorphized beasts struggle to fend off the encroachments of their two legged foes.
At IdeaSpace, Drew experiments with a new technique and new materials in this very special, December-long show. Where traditionally acrylic paints and inks are applied to two unique surfaces, items collected at antique and thrift stores, a new process experiments with the use of layering and concave surfaces. Using bowls and other items, Drew paints his scenes between multiple layers of resin, encasing his figures into new configurations where their dangers and threats remain forever suspended behind and in front of our beloved creatures. With new dimensions and darker shadows, an excited atmosphere is evoked and this world is enhanced in fantastical new ways.
Drew Mosley is an artist and carpenter living in Ottawa, Ontario. He spends his days between an exhaustive studio practice and various building and woodworking projects around the Ottawa Valley. His free time is spent bushwhacking through the wilderness with his wife and their gentle giant Olive, their Newfoundland dog. Together with notions of solitude and the resiliency of nature, notions that figure prominently throughout Drew’s paintings and drawing, these influences are ever present in his work. IdeaSpace, Ottawa’s downtown collaboration space, studio and special events hall is thrilled to announce our first collaborator in residence. “After Dark” is a unique new collection of beloved local artist, carpenter, woodsman and beard owner Drew Mosley. Join us for his opening, Dec. 7th at 7:00pm.
